Watch the Gap

At this point, is there a celebrity under the sun who hasn’t worn a cutout dress? Early on, the glam cutouts on Gucci’s 2010 runway caught on with pop stars, then the look blew up with Stella McCartney’s 2011 collection, when Kate Winslet and a dozen other stars wore her sculptural dresses with sheer polka-dot cutouts. Come spring 2013, there is no doubt that cutouts are having a sexy little moment. The New York label Cushnie et Ochs has been making body-conscious dresses, many with cutouts, since its debut in 2008. And why not, said Carly Cushnie, who with Michelle Ochs designs the line. “Why not show off in a dress that highlights a beautiful figure?” Among those on board are, from left, Diane Kruger in Cushnie, Brit Marling in Stella McCartney, Zo? Kravitz in Alexander Wang and Karlie Kloss in Cushnie. Yes, some exposed designs will require a membership at Tracy Anderson. But others, like this cobalt blue number with the flirty neckline,

or the orange one with adorable Swiss-cheese cutouts, are accessible. Either would be stunning as a spring cocktail dress.
