Motion picture Review: ‘Breakfast With Curtis,’ an Indie Directed by Laura Colella

December 3rd, 2013

Theo Inexperienced, still left, and Jonah Parker in “Breakfast With Curtis.”

Desultory, dauntingly Diy but secretly successful, “Breakfast With Curtis” is anything like a leafy summer afternoon in motion picture sort. This is the third attribute from the writer and director Laura Colella, who has shot it in and around her possess well-loved, multifamily Victorian and the house up coming doorway. Her neighbors engage in the film’s overlapping, underdressed group of pals and family members. This micro-indie movie is partly about a taciturn, house-schooled teenager, Curtis (subtly played by Jonah Parker), coming out of his shell, but it’s mainly about hanging out.

Curtis will help Syd, a mail-get bookseller (played by Theo Inexperienced, a bookseller), make internet-video clip monologues. Over and above that, the grownups laze about, surprise aloud, consume (and otherwise indulge), goof off and normally go times so cost-free of care that Curtis’s dad is requested what it is like to perform nine to five. The name of the placing, Providence, seems peculiarly suited for this blessed patch of boho serene.

The acting is as everyday as the casting might advise, at times bewilderingly so, but Ms. Colella appealingly underplays specific times, as if getting a cue from her characters’ permit-it-experience frame of mind. Curtis slowly blends in and will take factors in stride, and that appears a lesson in by itself. It is a film whose seminal celebration occurred 5 many years previously, when Syd stated an unkind term to Curtis concerning a cat, due to the fact, nicely, which is how it goes sometimes.
