Dance: Experimenting on All Sides

June 16th, 2013

Summer dance has mercifully improved since Sam Miller took over as the president of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. For this season’s River to River Festival, Mr. Miller, who is always thinking of ways to invigorate the dance world, has selected 12 choreographers — including Luciana Achugar, Vanessa Anspaugh, Reggie Wilson and Souleymane Badolo — to show works over a two-year period. It’s an experiment, as much for the artists as it is for audience members.

A sortable calendar of noteworthy cultural events in the New York region, selected by Times critics.

While some artists offer open rehearsals, there will be finished work to consider as well, including “r e v e a l,” choreographed by Silas Rienerin collaboration with Rashaun Mitchell and Cori Kresge, and “The Set Up: Jean-Christophe Par?,” a work by Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey. Part of an eight-part performance series, “The Set Up” is created with a dance or movement-based artist who is considered to be a master of a particular form. Mr. Par? is a French baroque dance artist. It just might change the way you see dance.

And what’s the magic word? It’s free. (Through July 15, various locations; )
