SENIOR PROM, the Starlight Roof of the Waldorf-Astoria, 1990. The song of the night is Madonna’s “Vogue”; chicken paillard with capers is congealing on the plates; and the alpha girls of the class have chosen black Betsey Johnson dresses that barely cover their crotches. I, however, have watched “Pretty in Pink” too many times and, Manhattan-raised, romanticize a soothing suburban aesthetic. The grass is always greener, especially over a picket fence. My date is from Hartsdale, N.Y., and I’m wearing a white satin Zum Zum off-the-shoulder frock bought at Macy’s. Halston would have been appalled. The towering designer from Des [...]
By Stuart Everitt Where Fashion Is All Relative: Suzy Menkes speaks with Christopher and Tammy Kane, the brother and sister behind a British fashion success story. LONDON — Christopher Kane has a word for the Barbie dolls grouped in his studio wearing miniature versions of his perky, girlish fashion creations. “Evil!” says the designer in his soft Scottish accent. “They look like they could come alive at night.” A fashion blend of sweet innocence and a hint of a dark side is the leitmotif of Mr. Kane who, with his sister Tammy, has built up a small, but profitable fashion [...]
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Cher, Dolly, Madonna, Barbra, Bette. Ask someone to name a gay icon, and one or all of those names would come to mind. But you won’t find any of those ladies performing at gay resorts, hawking a book at the boy bars or trotting the coast-to-coast pride circuit each June. Ms. Arngrim, 51, became famous in 1974, when she joined “Little House on the [...]

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Rupert Murdoch and his wife, Wendi, appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. On Thursday, Mr. Murdoch filed for divorce. A spokeswoman for Mr. Murdoch’s media company, News Corporation, confirmed that Mr. Murdoch had made the filing, which said that the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.” Mrs. Murdoch was informed in advance of Mr. Murdoch’s decision, according to a person [...]
My computer screen filled with bosom. The bosom belonged to Dawn, the activities director at the care center in Florida where my father was living. She leaned over her laptop and shouted, “Can you hear us?” I leapt out of my chair, closed my office door. I was shaking. When Dawn stepped aside, I would see the father I hadn’t seen in years. And never sober. My father smoked and drank around the clock. And he didn’t just chase women — he lunged for them. He met any intervention with violent rage. The large sum of money he inherited from [...]
